Zerto Engineer & Replication Specialist

Role Summary

The Zerto Engineer executes the hands-on build, configuration, and day-to-day operation of the Zerto platform across the on-prem VMware estate and the Azure target, working from the Chennai offshore delivery center.

This role is the workhorse of the Zerto workstream during Phase 2 (Build) and Phase 3 (Wave-Based Replication), responsible for VRA deployment, VPG configuration, replication health, performance tuning, and issue triage.

The engineer takes technical direction from the onshore Zerto Solution Architect, partners with the Program Manager on wave execution and reporting, and operates on a follow-the-sun cadence with the onshore team.

During DR test windows in Phase 4, the Zerto Engineer extends working hours to overlap with US business hours for live test execution and real-time issue resolution.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Build

Install and configure ZVM on-prem and in Azure; deploy VRAs to VMware ESXi hosts; validate Zerto cluster health and connectivity between source and target.

VPG Configuration

Build VPGs per architect’s design assigning journals, retention, and replication policies; configure target Azure resources (VM size, disk type, vNIC, NSG).

Wave Execution

Initiate sync waves (100-200 VMs each); monitor sync progress, throughput, and bandwidth utilization; escalate replication errors and unsupported configurations.

Performance Tuning

Adjust journal sizing, throttling, and compression as needed; tune replication policies; resolve VPG lag and storage performance issues.

Issue Resolution

Triage failed VMs, network/storage bottlenecks, and agent/driver issues; reconfigure problematic workloads in coordination with application owners.

DR Test Execution

Configure Zerto Recovery Plans (boot order, IP mapping, post-failover scripts); execute non-disruptive test failovers; capture RPO/RTO measurements.

Operations & Reporting

Maintain replication health dashboards; produce daily/weekly wave status reports including % VMs protected, lag metrics, error counts, and remediation status.

Documentation & KT

Author and update Zerto operational runbooks; train client admins on Zerto operations, monitoring, and DR execution during Phase 5 handover.

Required Skills & Experience

• 6-9 years of infrastructure engineering with hands-on VMware vSphere and DR/replication tooling.
• 3+ years hands-on Zerto build/operate, including VPG configuration, journal management, runbook execution, and troubleshooting.
• Strong VMware vCenter, ESXi, and Azure portal/CLI working knowledge.
• PowerShell or PowerCLI scripting experience preferred.
• Experience supporting enterprise DR testing and migration programs.
• Strong troubleshooting and communication skills.
