POSITION DESCRIPTION: Director of Information Technology

DEPARTMENT: Business Services

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time Exempt/Salaried

SHIFT: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, Additional hours as requested and/or needed

SUMMARY:

The Director of Information Technology provides strategic and operational leadership for all technology functions at Clinton College. The Director oversees IT infrastructure, end-user support, cybersecurity, systems administration, and technology planning. This position reports directly to the Chief Information and Strategy Officer (CISO) and exercises sound judgment in managing day-to-day operations while contributing to the long-term technology vision of the institution.


MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to):

  • Manages daily IT operations and directs staff in achieving departmental goals aligned with the College's mission.
  • Develops and maintains standards for technical support services, devices, and systems architecture.
  • Designs and improves work systems by providing recommendations related to revising policies, procedures, and workflows to increase efficiency.
  • Will lead IT project planning, risk assessment, vendor management, and timely project completion.
  • Contributes to institutional strategic planning by providing short-term and long-term technology recommendations to the Chief Information and Strategy Officer.
  • Assists with communicating regularly with college faculty and staff regarding service delivery, system status, and technology initiatives.
  • Conducts follow-up investigations on IT inquiries, complaints, and incidents.
  • Establishes departmental goals, identify areas for improvement, and implements action plans.
  • Ensure compliance with college policies and relevant regulatory requirements and maintain internal controls within the IT function.
  • Stays current with emerging technologies and higher education IT trends by attending relevant workshops, conferences, and professional development opportunities.


Department-Specific Functions

  • Oversee and manage the College's IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, endpoints, and cloud services.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for cybersecurity monitoring, incident response, and vulnerability management.
  • Manage and monitor security platforms and endpoint protection solutions across campus.
  • Oversee log ingestion and monitoring through available security tools (SIEM or equivalent).
  • Evaluate and recommend security controls to protect the College's network, resources and data.
  • Manage relationships with third-party technology vendors and managed service providers.
  • Support academic and administrative technology needs, including learning management systems, enterprise applications, and classroom technology.
  • Assist in planning and executing upgrades to the College's campus software infrastructure, including enterprise systems such as Ellucian, Canvas, and other related academic and administrative platforms.
  • Ensure business continuity through proactive disaster recovery and backup planning.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable regulations and frameworks (e.g., FERPA, NIST, HIPAA where applicable). Perform other related work as required.


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

Education & Certifications

Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, or a related field required;

Master's degree in similar field is preferred.

Relevant industry certifications preferred (e.g., CompTIA Security+, Network+, CISSP, CISM, or equivalent).

Experience

4+ years of progressive experience in information technology, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.

Experience in cybersecurity operations, incident response, or a Security Operations environment strongly preferred.

Familiarity with IT compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST, COBIT, ISO 27000) preferred.

Experience in a higher education environment is a plus.

Skills & Abilities

Ability to lead, motivate, and develop a small team of IT professionals.

Strong decision-making and problem-solving capabilities in time-sensitive situations.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.

Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to drive operational improvements.

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Knowledge of business continuity, disaster recovery, and risk management principles.

Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: The physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties are: Environment: Office environment, subject to interruptions; off-campus travel required. May require evenings and weekend work. Physical Abilities: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer terminal; hearing and speaking to exchange information and make professional presentations; sitting for extended periods of time.
