About The Underground NE

The Underground NE is a faith-based, nonprofit organization committed to ending human trafficking by educating communities and supporting adult survivors through trauma-informed services and partnerships. Rooted in Christian values, we seek justice, restoration, and transformation in the lives of those impacted by trafficking across the Connecticut and beyond.

We engage with churches, nonprofits, law enforcement, service providers, and volunteers to raise awareness, foster collaboration, and build sustainable support systems for survivors of human trafficking.

Position Summary

The Community Engagement and Development Coordinator plays a vital role in advancing The Underground NE’s mission by fostering meaningful relationships with churches, community groups, donors, volunteers, and partner organizations. This individual will design and implement strategic engagement and development initiatives to broaden community awareness, and generate financial and in-kind support for the organization’s anti-trafficking and survivor support programs.

This position requires a dynamic, relationally-driven professional who is passionate about social justice, highly organized, and skilled in communication, partnership-building, and resource development in a faith-based environment.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement (35%)

  • Build and maintain relationships with churches, schools, civic groups, and community organizations
  • Lead presentations, trainings, and outreach events to raise awareness about human trafficking
  • Represent The Underground NE at local and regional events
  • Develop outreach materials aligned with our mission and Christian values
  • Grow and support a network of community advocates and church liaisons
  • Track engagement efforts and adapt strategies based on feedback and impact

Development & Fundraising (50%)

  • Support and implement fundraising strategies (individual, church, corporate, and events)
  • Plan and execute fundraising campaigns and donor appreciation initiatives
  • Manage donor communications, including newsletters and impact updates
  • Research and pursue grants and partnership opportunities
  • Maintain accurate donor records using CRM systems

Volunteer Coordination (15%)

  • Recruit, train, and support volunteers
  • Match volunteers with appropriate roles across programs and events
  • Foster ongoing engagement through training and recognition efforts
  • Ensure alignment with trauma-informed and survivor-centered practices

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Social Work, Communications, Ministry, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years of experience in nonprofit development, community engagement, or related work
  • Strong alignment with Christian values and faith-based mission work
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills
  • Experience building partnerships with churches or community organizations
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Reliable motor vehicle and valid driver's license
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms
  • Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently
  • Commitment to justice, advocacy, and trauma-informed care

Preferred

  • Experience in anti-human trafficking, survivor services, or justice-focused ministry
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and survivor-centered practices
  • Background in fundraising or volunteer management
  • Experience working with diverse communities
